Lennoxville's Heritage

Lennoxville derives its name from Charles Lennox, the duke of Richmond, who was governor general of Upper and Lower Canada in 1819. Prior to this, the area was known as Little Forks, so designated by the Native American peoples who set up camp on the St. Francis River, very near the Massawippi River. With the founding of Bishop's University in 1853, Lennoxville assumed an international reputation as the setting of an important center of learning. The Lennoxville bo-rough sits to the south of Sherbrooke pro-per, and can be accessed via routes 108, 143, and 147.

St. Mark's Chapel on the Bishop's University campus was built in 1857, mo-deled after typical British college chapels such as those of Oxford and Cambridge. It is of 13th century Gothic style. Also on campus, the Centennial Theater, the Bandeen Hall and the Foreman Art Gallery.

The Uplands Cultural and Heritage Center, formerly known as the Speid House, is of Neo-Georgian style. Built in 1862, this former family residence is now a museum dedicated to preserving and supporting the culture and heritage of the Eastern Townships. Traditional English tea is a trademark of the Center. Lennoxville is also known for its historical homes and antique shops.

The St. Francis and Massawippi sections of the Grandes- Fourches bike path bring cyclists across two rivers, then next to a covered bridge and the former Capelton / Eustis mine before leading them further to the village of North Hatley.

The Golden Lion Pub and microbrewery is the first handcrafted brewery in Quebec. Since 1986 it has been offering on-site tastings of its beers: the Blonde des Cantons, the Lion's Pride, the Bishop's Bitter, the Ambrée d'Amour, and the Irish Stout.

In addition, two golf courses are to be found in Lennoxville: the Old Lennoxville Golf Club (1897), famous for its history, and the Milby Golf Club (1963), reputed for its quality. Both are located in the rolling countryside just minutes from the center of Sherbrooke.
